essential oil – lotion vs. oil?
I wanted to blend some essential oils for sleep (mandarin, clary sage, bergamot, lavender) and pain relief (chamomile, peppermint, clove bud)
I’ve heard that lotions are absorbed better, yet I see more oil blends than lotions on the market. Which one is better?
I am trying to decide whether a cream base or oil base are more readily absorbed by the skin. Either way I would like to make my own blends. Sorry about not being more specific. Thanks.
Ps- why do lotions and creams spread more easily even though there are more added ingredients than oils??
Essential oils are only absorbed by the top layers of the skin, deep enough to affect the surface of the skin, but not deeper. I’m a big fan of mixing essential oils with plain carrier oils. Jojoba and apricot kernel oils are both great, and absorb well. Apricot smells pretty strong, so I usually go with jojoba. Grapeseed is really light, and I haven’t used it in a while so I don’t remember first-hand, but it supposedly absorbs quickly and fully.
I don’t see any benefit to using a cream, other than personal preference of feeling. My personal preference is oil. I love the feeling of oil, and I haven’t used a store bought cream in 8-9 years. It seems messy at first, and maybe appears not to be absorbed, until you get used to using a very small amount to cover a large area, and then building up a few drops at a time until you get used to what you need.
As far as spreading goes, the added ingredients are what makes a cream more spreadable. The the waters helps thin it out, emulsifiers help bind the oil, alcohols preserve it, something in there thickens it. For straight carriers, if you apply them to damp skin, it will help the oil spread.
