Brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day is usually sufficient to prevent normal mouth odour, but even good hygiene will not help if bad breath is due to eating pungent foods, such as onions or garlic, drinking strong-smelling beverages, such as whisky, or smoking. This is because the odour-causing chemicals in foods, beverages or cigarettes are picked up by the blood and excreted by the lungs when you exhale. Although odours can be masked with mints or cloves, you won’t be rid of them until the offending substance leaves your system. Bad breath that persists despite conscientious brushing and flossing may mean that an underlying dental or medical condition is to blame. Check with your dentist before seeing your doctor. Herbalism, naturopathy and homeopathy can mask or help to prevent halitosis.
Herbalism.
To mask bad breath, try chewing parsley, a whole clove or cardamom seeds, or drink an infusion of peppermint or fenugreek seeds. If bad breath is due to cavity, cloves may be doubly effective because they have analgesic properties and will help to alleviate pain before you visit the dentist.
Naturopathy
Avoid eating aromatic foods and cut down on refined sugar, which exacerbates tooth decay. If you have a sweet tooth, substitute fruits, which contain natural sugar.
Homeopathy
Nux vomica For sour smelling breath in the morning, or after meals or alcohol.

IRRITATED GUMS
Swollen, tender, inflamed gums- a condition known as gingivitis- are triggered by accumulated plaque between and the base of the teeth. Others factors that can cause gingivitis include poor nutrition, especially low levels of folic acid and the B vitamins, ill-fitting dentures, the presence of a local or systemic infection and cigarette smoking. Specific conditions that create a greater demand for nutrients (particularly folic acid and B Vitamins), such as pregnancy or taking the contraceptive pill, may increase the likehood of gingivitis. The condition is usually painless, but if it is left unchecked it may lead to a more serious condition called periodontitis, which destroys the bone and the tissues supporting the teeth. The build up of plaque can be reduced by proper oral hygienic. Herbal mouthwashes, homeopathic remedies and eliminating sugar from the diet may all be effective in promotion the health of the gums and alleviating discomfort.
Herbalism
Rinse your mouth several times a day with an infusion of sage. You can add 5 drops of Echinacea, myrrh or rosemary tincture to the infusion, or use the tinctures on their own to make mouthwashes. Avoid marrh, rosemary and sage if you are pregnant.
Homeopathy
Mercurius Solubilis For inflamed gums, a metallic taste and profuse salivation, Phosphorus For gums the bleed easily. Hepar Sulphuris For gums that are painful to touch and that bleed easily or for abscesses that erupt at the gum line.
Naturopathy.
Replace highly refined foods such as cakes, biscuits and doughnuts with foods such as grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Instead of sweet and soft drinks, snack on nuts and drink freshly squeezed fruit juices, Consult a naturopath to establish whether you would benefit from folic acid, B vitamins or calcium supplements.
Mouth Ulcers
Ulcers on the inside of the mouth or on the gums result from viral infection or from injuries, such as an abrasion from a fork or dental brace. The can also be due to a stomach disorder, poor diet or high stress levels. The tendency to suffer from mouth ulcers may run in the family, Mouth ulcers may run in the family. Mouth ulcers usually clear up relatively quickly. If they persist beyond a week, or if they are accompanied by fever or other symptoms of illness, consult your doctor. The conventional treatment is an analgesic mouth gel which is applied directly to the ulcer.
