Dry Cough Treatment At Home

dry cough treatment at home
Does this sound like kennel cough?

I have a 12 month old rottie, she was Spayed 9 days ago at our local dogs home and for the last couple of days she has had a horrible dry cough which results in retching, most of the time nothing is produced from the retching though and today she managed to produce a horrible foamy phlegm

She is perfectly fine in herself, still playful, eating and drinking fine too and she seems to only have the cough when she gets over excited or starts to bark.

Is it possible that she could have caught Kennel Cough from the dogs home? as this is the only place she has been in contact with lots of dogs, plus she had her surgery whilst there so she could have been a bit more susceptible maybe?

Should I take her to the vet? On average how much would treatment cost? (in UK)

Hello,

It sounds like your dog may have kennel cough (Infectious tracheobronchitis) and/or fluid retention in the lungs from possible trachea trauma while the trachea tube was being dropped down during surgery. The cough should be easily induced by gentle palpation of the larynx or trachea.

She would have developed the symptoms 5-10 days after intial exposure. The severity of the disease usually diminishes after the first 5 days but the disease persists 10-20.

As far as treatment goes your dog will not be hospitalized because kennel cough is highly contagious. The vet may give you some cough suppressants to help ease the cough. In most cases the dog gets better on their own, unless the case is extreme and then antibiotics will be used. If there is fluid in the lungs the vet will most likely give you some furosemide to pull the congestion out the lungs.

This is something I would defintely see a vet for. Always better to be safe than sorry. I understand th concern with cost, but I would call around to local vet clinics and ask how much they charge for office visits. Shop around for the best deal. Usually medications aren’t too terribly expensive, and if you have a concern with the cost of medications tell the veterinarian and they will let you know the price ranges of possible treatments. (after all they are there to keep your pet healthy).

good luck.

(P.S. I havde a rottie too! I love mine a ton, I don’t think I could ever Not have a Rott.)
