Eyes like all other organs of the body undergoing wear and tear. With age, the wear begins to affect vision. Related macular degeneration as the name suggests is a macular disease that occurs mainly after a person reaches middle age. The detection of cell dysfunction of light in the macula is the cause of AMD.
The retina at the back of the eye is the light sensitive tissue that transmits the images we see in the brain in the form of electrical pulses. Macula is a part of the retina and is responsible for sharp central vision needed for reading, driving, distinguish colors and collecting fine details.
Related macular degeneration remove the central part everything that a person views. For example, if the person with AMD looks at a photograph of a person will be able to view only the outermost regions of the picture and the center portions will be blurred or partially black and therefore the person will not be able to identify the photograph. AMD rarely leads to total blindness.
We estimated 15 million people in the U.S. suffer from age-related macular degeneration and some two million new cases are diagnosed each year. AMD is the cause of blindness in adults over 60 years. Approximately 25% of the population in the age group 65 to 75 is suffering AMD. The figures are even higher for adults over 75 years.
The causes of AMD
The exact cause of AMD has not yet come to ophthalmologists. However, some risk factors have been identified.
Aging: aging is considered the main reason for AMD. It is estimated about 10% of the total world population in the age group from 66 to 74 years suffering from the disease. The percentage of people who are affected by AMD increases higher than in the aging process.
Smoking: Studies in macular degeneration have found that smoking increases the risk AMD.
Gender: Women are more prone to AMD than men.
Race: The disease occurs more in Caucasians than in black people.
Family history: The odds of a person developing AMD is higher if the family the person has a history of AMD.
Eye color: People with blue eyes are more prone to AMD. Because blue eyes have less protective pigment that neutralizes the effect of ultraviolet light.
Diet: Research has identified fat consumption as a major reason for the development of AMD.
Other diseases that lead to AMD: People with hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol may develop age-related macular degeneration in the archive.
Sunlight: We believe that increased exposure of eyes to sunlight increases the risk of AMD. However, this remains a debated issue that some tests are not according to the viewpoint.
